The North Brooklyn Open Space Equity Coalition (OSEC) – consisting of North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, El Puente de Williamsburg, North Brooklyn Neighbors, and Newtown Creek Alliance – is alarmed by continuing environmental threats to the planet and our home here in North Brooklyn, all made worse by the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on disadvantaged communities of color. As we prepare for transitions across all levels of government, we cannot sit still and wait for new leaders in City Hall and beyond to respond to our communities’ pressing needs. The time is NOW to organize and partner with the community, our greatest ally, to place matters into our hands, planning our future through innovative solutions and the implementation of a results-driven, grassroots policy and equitable open space platform. Years in the making, OSEC hopes our partnership with the community guides communities beyond North Brooklyn fighting for healthier, safer and more equitable open spaces. With the help of our coalition’s new Policy Fellow, Matthew Shore, we look forward to releasing more updates and details soon.
