1. Street Tree Care on Kingsland Avenue
10am – 12pm
McGolrick Park
Give the Street Trees on Kingsland Ave a little love. Get to know them and what they need to thrive. Meet Sophia Wohl and Bill Schmidt of Greening Greenpoint at the McGolrick Park Pavillion.
2. Soil Workshops
11am – 2 pm
520 Kingsland, 3rd Floor
Urban Soils Basics and Soil Testing 101 with Urban Soils Institute
Join us for a lecture on the basics of healthy soils and common contaminants. What are the macronutrients, pH, and salinity of your soil? Why are these things important? Bring in your own soil or experiment with someone else’s learn how to make sure your soil is in good shape.
Explore Your Soil with NCA
NCA will walk you through – What’s it all made up of anyway? Using microscopes and hand lenses discover the detail and surprising life that makes life on Earth as we know it possible.
Soil is for Everyone! with Eco-Schools
The youngest among us can get involved too. Join EcoSchools to make seed balls, color some microbes or fungi, street trees or flowers coloring books. Get to know Kingsland Wildflowers by taking a kid-friendly tour. Kids love mixing soil and using shovels – here’s their chance. There is so much to do and we love safe play!
3. Free Compost Giveaway from DSNY with NAG
11am – 2pm
520 Kingsland, Parking Lot
Compliments of community composting and city wide brown bins, you can take home your own 40lb bag of compost, made right here in NYC by NYC! Compost is a soil amendment so you should know how to mix it right, we’ll show you how. Much thanks to DSNY for providing the compost.
4. Waterfront Planting with NCA
2 – 4pm
520 Kingsland, Parking Lot
Help NCA reclaim our waterfront with the planting of native plants in new planters and along the sidewalk. The plants have been chosen to attract birds and bees and other pollinators that need our help finding food in the otherwise harsh industrial environment.
