BACKGROUND
On August 28, 2024 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the Proposed Cleanup Plan for the East Branch tributary. We have been waiting for a cleanup plan for Newtown Creek for many years! The release of the East Branch Early Action Proposed Cleanup Plan is a significant first step towards the cleanup of Newtown Creek as a whole. If done properly, cleaning the East Branch tributary will reduce human health risks and contaminants in this area of the Creek, create opportunities for habitat restoration and community access, and serve as a reference for the rest of the Newtown Creek cleanup.
The EPA is accepting comments on the plan during a 60-day comment period which runs from August 28 to November 12, 2024. Written comments should be postmarked by November 12, 2024 and emailed to Caroline Kwan, Remedial Project Manager: kwan.caroline@epa.gov.
