Newtown Creek, a federally designated superfund site that receives over a billion gallons of untreated sewage discharge, is slowly recovering from over 100 years of industrial pollution and neglect. This bike tour will visit a number of key remediation and contaminated sites around the Creek, such as the Greenpoint Oil Spill (the country’s largest underground oil spill). Participants will learn from the Newtown Creek Alliance staff details about the Superfund investigation and cleanup as well as the City’s long term plans to reduce sewage overflow. More info here.

Infrastructure Creek: A Walking Tour

If you want infrastructure, then join NCA historian Mitch Waxman and in just one and a half miles he’ll show you the largest and newest of NYC’s 14 sewer plants, six bridges, a Superfund site, three rail yards with trains moving at street grade, a highway that carries 32 million vehicle trips a year 106 feet over water. The highway feeds into the Queens Midtown Tunnel, and we’ll end it all at the LIC ferry landing where folks are welcome to grab a drink and enjoy watching the sunset at the East River, as it lowers behind the midtown Manhattan skyline. Newtown Creek Bike Tour

Join NCA for a guided bike tour to see and discuss ecological and industrial activity near and along the Newtown Creek shoreline. Once a vast tidal wetland, the Creek quickly became one of the busiest waterways in the county, leaving a significant legacy of environmental destruction and contamination, leading to the ultimate designation as a federal superfund. Apollo Street End Cleanup with Evergreen Exchange

NCA is joining up with our partners from Evergreen Exchange to cleanup litter and debris from the end of Apollo Street in Greenpoint (where it dead ends at Newtown Creek). Show up if you are interested in helping out. We ask all volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots, clothing that they can get dirty, and to bring a hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle if weather warrants.

The Getting to Zero in Dutch Kills project aims to produce a community driven action plan for reducing the ~200 million gallons of combined sewer overflow that discharges annually into the Dutch Kills tributary of Newtown Creek. The community action plan will draw from GIS analysis of the Dutch Kills drainage area, recommendations made in two recently published community vision plans for both the Brooklyn and Queens sides of Newtown Creek: Bridging the Creek, produced by GreenShores NYC, and Newtown Creek Vision Plan produced by Newtown Creek Alliance and Riverkeeper, and a priority list of projects identified by local stakeholders in the spring of 2018. Wastewater and Nature Walk Tour

In honor of World Toilet Day, NYC H2O, FLUSH, and Newtown Creek Alliance are hosting a walking tour about where NYC’s water and waste go. The tour will begin in Queens, where we will explore Newtown Creek’s combined sewage overflow (CSO) outputs and nearby wetland restoration projects. We will then walk to Kingsland Wildflowers, where we will explore green infrastructure that can help mitigate stormwater runoff while admiring the treatment plants’ digester eggs. We will end the walk at Newtown Creek’s Nature Walk, enjoying the ecology around the largest Wastewater Treatment Center in the city. The tour will be approximately 3 miles on flat ground and will have restroom breaks in the middle. We recommend wearing walking shoes and preparing for cooler weather. This class will highlight the supreme influence these ancient and often overlooked organisms have upon our health, society, and environment and also provide a succinct peek into the Fungal Queendom from the perspectives of ecology, anthropology, pharmacology, and bioremediation. The class also features a workshop component that teaches attendees how to perform low tech and low cost mushroom cultivation techniques that can be replicated at home with upcycled materials. Bats on the Creek!

Join NCA, NYC Audubon and the North Brooklyn Boat Club for a very unique canoe trip to find and observe everyone’s favorite flying mammal, bats! Utilizing two 25′ canoes, trained canoe trip leaders will lead the group onto Newtown Creek and into two very unique tributaries: Whale Creek in Brooklyn and Dutch Kills in Queens. For the past two years, ecologists from NYC Audubon have monitored bat activity atop the Kingsland Wildflowers green roof in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Data has shown this time of year to be the most active for local bat populations and ecologists will join the canoe expedition to help identify ideal areas for feeding and nesting. Infrastructure Creek: A Walking Tour

If you want infrastructure, then join NCA historian Mitch Waxman and in just one and a half miles he’ll show you the largest and newest of NYC’s 14 sewer plants, six bridges, a Superfund site, three rail yards with trains moving at street grade, a highway that carries 32 million vehicle trips a year 106 feet over water. The highway feeds into the Queens Midtown Tunnel, and we’ll end it all at the LIC ferry landing where folks are welcome to grab a drink and enjoy watching the sunset at the East River, as it lowers behind the midtown Manhattan skyline. The Birthplace of Mobil Oil: A Walking Tour

13 Steps Around Dutch Kills – A Walking Tour with Mitch Waxman

In 13 steps, Newtown Creek Alliance Historian Mitch Waxman will be showing us the then and now of Dutch Kills tributary, once known as the “workshop of the United States.” A central maritime artery of Long Island City, Dutch Kills is surrounded by hundreds of factory buildings, titan rail yards, and crossed by century old bridges – and it’s found just a few blocks away from Queens Plaza. During this three hour tour, we will cover three miles of Brooklyn and Queens to see where the industrial revolution actually happened. Bring your camera, as the tour will be revealing an incredible landscape along this section of the troubled Newtown Creek Watershed.

A photographer and blogger, Mitch has been documenting the area’s rich history and the environmental issues that plague the largely unknown 3.8-mile-long waterway, found at the center of New York City and recently placed on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Federal Superfund site list. The presentation will photographically carry viewers from Newtown Creek’s junction with the East River all the way back to the heart of darkness found at its end in East Williamsburg. The Getting to Zero in Dutch Kills project aims to produce a community driven action plan for reducing the ~200 million gallons of combined sewer overflow that discharges annually into the Dutch Kills tributary of Newtown Creek. The community action plan will draw from GIS analysis of the Dutch Kills drainage area, recommendations made in two recently published community vision plans for both the Brooklyn and Queens sides of Newtown Creek: Bridging the Creek, produced by GreenShores NYC, and Newtown Creek Vision Plan produced by Newtown Creek Alliance and Riverkeeper, and a priority list of projects identified by local stakeholders in the spring of 2018. Wastewater and Nature Walk Tour

In honor of World Toilet Day, NYC H2O, FLUSH, and Newtown Creek Alliance are hosting a walking tour about where NYC’s water and waste go. The tour will begin in Queens, where we will explore Newtown Creek’s combined sewage overflow (CSO) outputs and nearby wetland restoration projects. We will then walk to Kingsland Wildflowers, where we will explore green infrastructure that can help mitigate stormwater runoff while admiring the treatment plants’ digester eggs. We will end the walk at Newtown Creek’s Nature Walk, enjoying the ecology around the largest Wastewater Treatment Center in the city. The tour will be approximately 3 miles on flat ground and will have restroom breaks in the middle. We recommend wearing walking shoes and preparing for cooler weather. Tickets are free, reserve a spot here.

This class will highlight the supreme influence these ancient and often overlooked organisms have upon our health, society, and environment and also provide a succinct peek into the Fungal Queendom from the perspectives of ecology, anthropology, pharmacology, and bioremediation. The class also features a workshop component that teaches attendees how to perform low tech and low cost mushroom cultivation techniques that can be replicated at home with upcycled materials. Bats on the Creek!

Join NCA, NYC Audubon and the North Brooklyn Boat Club for a very unique canoe trip to find and observe everyone’s favorite flying mammal, bats! Utilizing two 25′ canoes, trained canoe trip leaders will lead the group onto Newtown Creek and into two very unique tributaries: Whale Creek in Brooklyn and Dutch Kills in Queens. For the past two years, ecologists from NYC Audubon have monitored bat activity atop the Kingsland Wildflowers green roof in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Data has shown this time of year to be the most active for local bat populations and ecologists will join the canoe expedition to help identify ideal areas for feeding and nesting. Infrastructure Creek: A Walking Tour

If you want infrastructure, then join NCA historian Mitch Waxman and in just one and a half miles he’ll show you the largest and newest of NYC’s 14 sewer plants, six bridges, a Superfund site, three rail yards with trains moving at street grade, a highway that carries 32 million vehicle trips a year 106 feet over water. The highway feeds into the Queens Midtown Tunnel, and we’ll end it all at the LIC ferry landing where folks are welcome to grab a drink and enjoy watching the sunset at the East River, as it lowers behind the midtown Manhattan skyline. The Birthplace of Mobil Oil: A Walking Tour

13 Steps Around Dutch Kills – A Walking Tour with Mitch Waxman

In 13 steps, Newtown Creek Alliance Historian Mitch Waxman will be showing us the then and now of Dutch Kills tributary, once known as the “workshop of the United States.” A central maritime artery of Long Island City, Dutch Kills is surrounded by hundreds of factory buildings, titan rail yards, and crossed by century old bridges – and it’s found just a few blocks away from Queens Plaza. During this three hour tour, we will cover three miles of Brooklyn and Queens to see where the industrial revolution actually happened. Bring your camera, as the tour will be revealing an incredible landscape along this section of the troubled Newtown Creek Watershed.

Following a tour of Kingsland Wildflowers green roof and community space, join Newtown Creek Alliance historian, Mitch Waxman, for a special presentation exploring one of the key epicenters of the Industrial Revolution: Newtown Creek. A photographer and blogger, Mitch has been documenting the area’s rich history and the environmental issues that plague the largely unknown 3.8-mile-long waterway, found at the center of New York City and recently placed on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Federal Superfund site list. The presentation will photographically carry viewers from Newtown Creek’s junction with the East River all the way back to the heart of darkness found at its end in East Williamsburg.
