Fairy Rings Gathering Series: SOIL

The Fairy Rings: Gathering Series is coordinated by artist Jan Mun in partnership with Newtown Creek Alliance. The series engages visiting environmental experts in conversation with local stewards focused on Soil, Water, and Air, in the context of Newtown Creek and its surrounding area.

Our final event is focused on SOIL and will feature Nance Klehm, founder of Social Ecologies based in Chicago, who will discuss soil restoration, remediation, and community-focused regenerative soils and water systems. Nance is internationally respected for her work on land politics and soil heath. She has been an ecological systems designer, landscaper, horticultural consultant, and agroecological grower for more than three decades. Find out more about Nance’s work: www.socialecologies.net

Homemade mushroom soup will be served. The event is free to attend, but space is limited.

Our next event is focused on AIR issues, Lael Goodman/North Brooklyn Neighbors, Michael Heimbinder/HabitatMap, Judith T. Zelikoff/NYU Grossman School of Medicine will share their experience with air quality monitoring and mitigation around Newtown Creek, Meeker Ave Plumes, and elsewhere. We will identify some best practices to create awareness and advocacy to share around air quality issues.

Participants will also have an opportunity to borrow an AirBeam monitor for personal use. Homemade mushroom soup will be served. The event is free to attend, but space is limited.

Kingsland Wildflowers Open Hours

Join us for open hour evenings to learn about green roofs, local plants, and the Newtown Creek while enjoying the moments before sunset from the iconic rooftop. NCA staff will be on hand to lead guided tours, answer questions about the roofs, provide educational resources on the ecological benefits of green roofs, and talk about all of our Newtown Creek focused work. English Kills Series: Morgan Ave + Johnson Ave

This June Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) is hosting a series of events centered around the English Kills tributary of Newtown Creek aimed to engage the East Williamsburg and Bushwick communities with this inaccessible waterway and ways that the upland communities can help improve conditions in both the Creek and on local streets.

This event will include:

  • Trash cleanup along the Bushwick Branch rail line from Morgan Avenue to the English Kills tributary of Newtown Creek. The event is being run in conjunction with New York and Atlantic Railway, who oversees freight operations on this active rail line.

Greenhouse Gang

Newtown Creek Alliance is excited to welcome volunteers to help out with our Greenhouse! Join us every third Tuesday of the month from May – September. Volunteers will assist us in up-potting and caring for our native plant nursery, many of which we grew from native seeds. Our horticulturalist, Brenda, will be onsite to guide activities and answer any questions about the plants.
