This annual festival aims to bring awareness to Greenpoint’s, and the surrounding communities’, longstanding environmental burdens; the transition to a cleaner, healthier future; as well as the global climate crisis and the potential for local, community-based solutions. This fun summer event is free and family friendly. Registration and more information TBA here.
Newtown Creek Alliance is excited to welcome volunteers to help out with our Greenhouse! Join us every third Tuesday of the month from May – September. Volunteers will assist us in up-potting and caring for our native plant nursery, many of which we grew from native seeds. Our horticulturalist, Brenda, will be onsite to guide activities and answer any questions about the plants. Register here!
NCA is partnering with the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, the North Brooklyn Community Boathouse, and the Queens Public Library to celebrate City of Water Day on July 15! NCA and NBCB will be with HPPC at the kayak launch in Hunters Point South Park (here’s a map) from 12-4pm for free community boating, a marine life exploration table highlighting animals and other life found in the Creek, and info about the park’s restored wetlands! You can also learn about our local waters at a great education program for kids and adults at the Hunters Point Branch of the Queens Public Library from 12-2pm to connect with both the Creek and the East River.
Join us for a special hands-on workshop with ecological systems designer Nance Klehm to build out a bioswale for water retention at Plank Road. Since 2013, NCA has been working at Plank Road (58th Road in Maspeth, Queens) to revitalize the historic street end into a rejuvenated public shoreline. Nance leads workshops to educate communities about the benefits of regenerative land management practices and we are thrilled to have her visit our Newtown Creek site.
Nance Klehm, founder of Social Ecologies based in Chicago, focuses on soil restoration, remediation, and community-focused regenerative soils and water systems. Nance is internationally respected for her work on land politics and soil heath. She has been an ecological systems designer, landscaper, horticultural consultant, and agroecological grower for more than three decades. Find out more about Nance’s work: www.socialecologies.net
