Join us for a two part hands-on event to cleanup the Creek and improve habitat along the shoreline.
Group 1: Walk to Apollo street end for a cleanup. All materials provided. Group 2: Stay at Penny Bridge for planting/cleanup/weeding. Groups reconvene at Penny Bridge.
NCA has been stewarding these two locations for a number of years now, but persistent dumping and stormwater issues remain a problem. Both sites need some tender, love and care before cold temperatures approach. Gloves, shovels, trash bags and all other necessary materials will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water, sun protection and wear closed-toed shoes.
The Meeker Avenue Plumes have been nominated to be put on the National Priority List, the first step to becoming a federal Superfund Site. Find out what that means and how you can help get the area cleaned up at this community meeting we are co-hosting with North Brooklyn Neighbors.
Find out more about the issue here.
Join NCA as we work to maintain our pollinator meadow at this street end park. The very health meadow needs a little thinning, so we will pursue a great divide to safely remove and relocate some of the plants within. All materials and tools will be provided. Sign up here.
Join NCA for a celebratory event hosted this year by NYC Department of Environmental Protection at the Newtown Creek Nature Walk. The event, hosted within the newly completed phase 3 of this beloved waterfront open space (enter at the end of Kingsland Ave), will include drinks and light food, speeches and celebration of our honorees. The event will be entirely outdoors, please hold Friday October 22nd as a rain date.
This year we are very excited to honor three distinct persons/organizations who have made substantial contributions to Reveal, Restore, and Revitalize Newtown Creek:
Laura Hofmann (Restore Award)
George Trakas (Revitalize Award)
Sane Energy & the No North Brooklyn Pipeline (Reveal Award)
Come celebrate our 19 years of achievement, Toast our honorees and support the ever important work ahead of us. Together we can continue to transform our waterway and the community’s relationship to it. See info about Sponsorship Levels here.
