Join the Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) and the North Brooklyn Boat Club for a special series of on-water tours to examine and discuss current water quality trends for Newtown Creek. NCA is soon to complete an intensive 6 month water sampling program in conjunction with LaGuardia Community College. We have been collected data on water quality health for parameters like bacteria, oxygen, and nutrients – all factors that vary in different locations in Newtown Creek as well as factors like temperature and rainfall.

Following an on-land introduction and presentation on water quality issues, the group will take to the Creek with the North Brooklyn Boat Club and paddle to particular areas of interest and conduct live testing.

The event will also help inform local residents about greater water quality themes within NYC and how we can help improve the environmental conditions for ourselves and generations to follow. These events are made possible with funding provided by the New York State Office of the Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation through the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund.

Note about boating:
The tour will utilize the North Brooklyn Boat Club’s two 25 foot canoes. No paddling experience is required to join, but we must ask that participants be prepared for physical activity over the course of a few hours outside. We do not anticipate severe contact with the water and a number of safety precautions will be followed to help prevent risk. The trip will be led by highly experienced and trained canoe guides, as per NBBC policy. There are a limited amount of seats available on the canoes, so please only reserve a spot if you are committed to attending. If only interested in attending the on-land presentation please do not reserve a spot. Trips may be canceled or rescheduled depending on weather conditions.
