Greenhouse Gang

Newtown Creek Alliance is excited to welcome volunteers to help out with our Greenhouse! Join us every third Tuesday of the month from May – September. Volunteers will assist us in up-potting and caring for our native plant nursery, many of which we grew from native seeds. Our horticulturalist, Brenda, will be onsite to guide activities and answer any questions about the plants.

Kingsland Wildflowers Open Hours

Join us for open hour evenings to learn about green roofs, local plants, and the Newtown Creek while enjoying the moments before sunset from the iconic rooftop. NCA staff will be on hand to lead guided tours, answer questions about the roofs, provide educational resources on the ecological benefits of green roofs, and talk about all of our Newtown Creek focused work. Tree Care Events with Council Member Restler

English Kills Series: Maria Hernandez Park

This June NCA is hosting a series of events centered around the English Kills tributary of Newtown Creek aimed to engage the East Williamsburg and Bushwick communities with this inaccessible waterway and ways that the upland communities can help improve conditions in both the Creek and on local streets.

This event will include:

  • Compost giveaway with BIG Reuse (first come, first serve)
  • Introduction to the importance of green infrastructure (why it is good for water quality in Newtown Creek)
  • Hands-on maintenance of curbside rain gardens around Maria Hernandez Park with NYC DEP
  • Cleanup of sidewalk and street trash around Maria Hernandez Park
