Newtown Creek Alliance had much to celebrate throughout 2024. Before diving into the details for our various programs, we wanted to share three unique highlights from the year!

  1. The Newtown Creek EarthCam has brought the Creek to a whole new constituency, with 292,609 views since it went live buy professional levitra without prescription on Earth Day, April 22, 2024.

2. In August, NCA collaborated with Billion Oyster Project (BOP) to place intertidal habitat units in Whale Creek. 3. Launched in the fall, our new education animations, by local artist Wyatt Bertz, have been a powerful addition to NCA’s environmental learning programs, making complex Creek topics visual and more accessible.


Connecting with Community
We were thrilled to welcome friends new and old at the nearly 40 free public events we hosted in 2024. From bike tours to the 8th Annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival to library lectures to Creek Critters, we engaged with over 3,000 members of the public in Creek-related programming.


From Classroom to Creek
We served a record-setting 5,200 students through school presentations and 135 field trips hosted at Kingsland Wildflowers in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and Queens Landing Boathouse & Environmental Center in Long Island City, Queens, in 2024.


Helping Hands
We had over 700 volunteers lend a hand at 36 separate cleanup and restoration events. From growing native plants with our Greenhouse Gang to bringing some much-needed love and maintenance to street-end sites along the Creek, our volunteers were key in NCA’s work this year. Together, we removed 13,300+ lbs of trash from areas near the Creek and 6,300+ lbs of non-native plants for compost collection in total.


Advocacy & Activation
Advocating for a cleaner, safer, and better connected Newtown Creek is core to our mission, and 2024 was an exciting year for planning and partnerships. Some highlights include:


Working for the Watershed
This year, we expanded and diversified the Newtown Native Nursery, producing over 1,700 native plants to support important pollinators. We continued our weekly maintenance of 15 DEP rain gardens within the Newtown Creek watershed, participated in weekly community water quality testing, enhanced and expanded our floating wetland work with LaGuardia Community College and Williamsburg High School of Architecture and Design, and continued ongoing monitoring for pollution in and around the Creek.
